Defining Materials Qualification Pathways in the Battery Industry
Bringing new battery materials to market requires more than promising laboratory results—it requires building confidence that a material’s benefits will translate through manufacturing, qualification, and commercial deployment. This paper defines a practical framework for material qualification, advocating for a shift from a traditional material-push approach to a risk-reduction, parallel-development model that enables earlier collaboration between material suppliers, cell manufacturers, and OEMs.

Participation as a contributor is open to professionals from Volta Foundation Member Companies across Platinum, Gold and Silver membership tiers, as well as strategic partners.
How much time does participation require?
Committees meet formally 1X per month, with occassional light offline work to complete Committee deliverables and outputs. Most contributors should expect to spend 2–4 hours per month.
What types of outputs do Committees produce?
Committees may produce insight briefs, frameworks, playbooks, best-practice guides, conference sessions, or other industry-relevant deliverables. All outputs are reviewed to ensure neutrality, credibility, and industry value.
