The rapid expansion of battery manufacturing has made one question increasingly important: How many workers are needed to produce one gigawatt-hour (GWh) of batteries? The answer shapes workforce development, manufacturing investment, industrial policy, and regional planning, yet published estimates vary widely because they often measure different parts of the battery value chain.
To establish a common benchmark, the Volta Foundation Workforce Readiness & Development Committee analyzed employment and production data from representative gigafactories across North America, Europe, and Asia. The analysis estimates that a mature cell manufacturing facility requires approximately 130 direct workers per GWh of annual production.

Applying this benchmark to projected battery manufacturing growth indicates the industry will require approximately 500,000 direct manufacturing workers globally by 2030, increasing to 725,000 by 2035. The analysis also finds that automation alone is unlikely to offset workforce demand, reinforcing the need for sustained investment in workforce development.
