New battery materials increasingly live in the gap between promising lab data and product-planning confidence. Material developers can often demonstrate a compelling benefit such as higher capacity, higher power, longer cycle life, lower cost, improved safety, or better sustainability before they can show that the same benefit will survive cell design, production scale, qualification testing, and customer launch timing. Bridging that gap today is both time and capital intensive.

Our central recommendation is to shift from a material-push model to a risk-reduction and parallel-development model. Instead of waiting for a material to become fully mature before customer evaluation begins, material developers should prioritize data that gives a cell maker and OEM enough confidence to plan a product around the benefit the new material provides.
This reframing does not eliminate the need for rigorous testing; instead, it makes the testing more useful. A strong material qualification process should first prove that the material benefit is real, then de-risk the tradeoffs that determine adoption.
